Do You Have An Adoption Song?

Many people that are in the process of adopting a baby, or have adopted, seem to have a song that represents their adoption journey. Some, like me, have many songs.  It could be a song that was just very popular at that time or a song in which the words have meaning to them.  The adoption journey is often very emotional, as are the songs that have meaning to folks in the adoption community.

Here is a great list of songs that having meaning to those who have adopted. Some songs that remind me of adoption are:

I Will Wait by Mumford and Sons

A Thousand Years by Christina Perri

I Just Haven’t Met You Yet by Michael Buble

A New Day Has Come by Celine Dion

When Love Takes You In by Stephen Curtis Chapman

Home by Phillip Phillips

Although the videos to these songs have a different focus and images that are not closely tied to adoption, I love listening to the words and what they mean to people who are waiting to adopt a baby to treasure.  Songs that remind people of adoption are often love songs, meant for couples. The love a parent has for their child is different, but just as strong-if not stronger, than the love for a spouse.  It’s easy to see how love songs, often become adoption songs.

Years ago, I remember a cousin of mine attending a wedding where the bride was adopted.  The bride was so thankful for the life her parents had given her, she surprised her parents at the reception and asked them to dance to a song that she dedicated to them, and it was Celine Dion’s Because You Loved MeDuring that dance, there was not a dry eye. I can only wish that someday my daughter would dedicate such a song to me.

It’s not only love songs that makes people think of their adoption journey.  In my case my daughter’s birth mother told us how much she loved the song Before He Cheats by Carrie Underwood when our daughter was born.  Guess who I think of every single time I hear that song on the radio? It brings a smile to my face!

There are so many great, meaningful songs. Please leave a comment and tell me what your favorite adoption songs are. I look forward to hearing from you. I’m sure you all have some great songs that have special meaning to you. I look forward to reading your comments.
